Shape
A 1:1 aspect ratio (square) works best for head shots in Snöball, the same as most other social media profile pics.
This pic is too tall, and when uploaded to Snöball the face would be obscured:

Composition
The best head shots have the face taking up the upper two-thirds of the frame. The one on the left has a little too much headroom (the space between the top of the head and the top of the frame), while the one on the right has too little headroom:
